Interested about our history? Samahang Pilipino Archival Research Class (SPARC) is a course in which students conduct research on a topic of their choosing related to Samahang Pilipino or the history of the Pilipinx community at UCLA. The course introduces students to both archival research and oral history as key methodologies. They will learn how to navigate and utilize the Samahang Pilipino archives, receive training in oral history interviewing, and be able to share their research at a final research showcase at the end of the quarter.
Samahang Pilipino began in 1972, with our entities forming later. Our history is rich with cultural foundations, a desire to serve our community, and advocacy for ourselves and our kaibigans (friends). Our five entities have faced much turmoil, such as the removal of affirmative action, yet have always found ways to stand together and keep our organization alive. We have also celebrated many accomplishments, including our 50th anniversary!
